Election night was one of very mixed emotions for our team in Cardiff Central. There was pure elation at our result - a 4500 Lib Dem majority turned into a 5000 Labour majority, taking the scalp of a two-term incumbent who'd been a Coalition Government Minister.

I want a leader with strength, a leader with vision, and a leader who can lead us to victory. And that’s why I am backing Andy Burnham.

As I stood in a car park outside Loughborough Sports Centre with tears running down my face at 7am on the 8^th of May after hearing that we had not only failed to gain the seats I was organising but we had also lost the seat closest to my heart, the seat we gained in a stunning by election victory.

As the leader of one of the country’s fastest-growing boroughs, I have been thinking about how our hard-working, dynamic and community-minded families are badly served by national politics.

They are transforming our borough, making it more entrepreneurial and vibrant than ever before. We at Brent council are inspired by them, making sure we stretch every pound as far as it will go, and investing wisely in our future, as they do everyday.

I was our candidate in Pudsey at the General Election, a key seat that we had to win. Losing was a bitter blow, not just because we contributed to Cameron’s victory, but because I’ve lived in Pudsey all of my life – I love the place and the people and I feel I have let them down.

Today Andy Burnham and Rachel Reeves have announced their new business advisory panel. I’m proud to be part of it. I believe that the Labour Party has failed to connect with a whole range of businesses in the ways it should for years and that this can now change.

I have represented Leicester as a councillor, an MP and I have served as leader of the city council and now as City Mayor.

During this time we have transformed our city.

But we wouldn’t have been able to do it without a Labour government.

We wouldn’t have been able to rebuild our NHS, improve our schools and regenerate our city without the Labour government’s investment and reform.

That’s why I desperately want us to win again in 2020.

On the surface it looks like a seat that Labour should never have lost.

Harrow is the most religiously diverse borough in the entire country, 68% of its residents are Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic (BAME) and my seat, Harrow East, has over 94 different languages spoken by its residents. It also came top in the country for residents having the most pride in identifying themselves as British – this is the modern multicultural success story in Britain.

But nearly one million ethnic minority voters in the UK didn’t vote Labour this May. Instead, the Tories found a way to connect with them and in turn these voters helped Cameron win an overall majority.
