REPORT: Dan Jarvis on Reconnecting Labour

Today Dan Jarvis released a report on how Labour can win back UKIP supporters and why Andy Burnham is right for the job.

You can read it here.

Andy Burnham said:

"Over a million former Labour voters voted for UKIP in May, and Labour cannot win in 2020 without winning back those votes. That’s why I asked Dan Jarvis to carry out research on why those voters lost faith in our Party, so that we have a better plan for winning back trust in Labour. As Leader, I will reach out to them and work hard to win back their trust. That is the only way we can achieve what this country so desperately needs: a Labour Government.

"Dan's findings make tough reading, but it’s vital that Labour pays attention. We’ve got to show these voters that we can make their lives better with big, bold policy ideas - on pay, jobs and housing. We’ve got to win back their trust on the economy and immigration and truly listen to their concerns.

"For too long, Labour campaigners have been avoiding people's eyes when this subject comes up on the doorstep. We need to respond to people's legitimate concerns about the challenges that EU migration creates in some of our poorest communities. I have seen them myself in my own constituency Leigh. It can lead to rapid changes in people's workplaces, wages being undercut and pressure on schools and GP surgeries. But, at present, places like Leigh are just left to cope with it all without any extra help from Westminster and Brussels. So no wonder they feel forgotten.

"I will put Labour back in touch with people in those communities and, unlike the false promises of Mr Farage, will provide practical answers to their concerns. I want changes to EU rules to protect wages and the "going rate" for the job. I have also called for EU funds to be given to the communities most affected by the free movement of people.

"A vote for UKIP was often a vote against politics as usual. I share their frustration about what has become of modern politics. That’s why I am running in this campaign - to change the Labour Party. I am offering major policies that will show voters that modern politics can change, and can bring hope and opportunity to all communities. Affordable homes for all. Social care brought into the NHS. Renationalised railways. True parity between technical and university education.

"Repeated opinion polls have shown that I’m the only candidate who can win back voters who Labour has lost to other parties, including UKIP. And I’ll do it on the back on radical ideas based on true Labour values, uniting our Party and making sure we can win again in 2020."
